When you start your Character in oblivion you will begin inside a prison cell, it is not made clear whilst your character is inside prison but Uriel Septim calls it "Fate". All you need to do it approach the cell gate and a Dark Elf across the hall will talk to you. After a while you will hear a door open followed by footsteps and the Dark Elf will step back from his cell gate, and you will be told to do the same by a Guard. The Guards along with the Emperor will then enter your cell and a secret passage will open, you are then instructed to follow them through the passage.

Within the secret passage you along with the guards will be attacked by members of the Mythic Dawn. During the first attack one of the Guards will be killed and in their corpse they will have a lower level sword and around her body will be an Akivari Katana, pick up both weapons and equip. After this attack you will split up from the rest of the group and then you will be attacked by two rats.

TIP: DO NOT INSTANTLY KILL THE TWO RATS, BLOCK AND ALLOW THEM TO ATTACK YOU, THIS WILL INCREASE YOUR BLOCK SKILL, USE RESTORATION TO INCREASE YOU VITALITY SO THAT YOU CAN BLOCK FOR LONGER.

From here on you will be on your own. The only enemies you will encounter is Rats and one zombie. Allow the rats to occasionally get hits on you when you are not blocking, this will increase you Armor skills. Also get into the habit of sneaking around and behind enemies. It is always good to wear a combination of Light and Heavy Armor so that you can increase in both Armor skills.

Once you have completed the start and you have escaped the sewers, Following these tips you will already have a fully prepared character to enter the World of Oblivion and the vast province of Cyrodiil
